Perk Series for Osher Members

The Perk Series is a bonus series of short lectures on a variety of topics and campus-based experiences. The Perk Series is offered twice a month during spring and fall sessions. These programs are open only to OLLI members and carry no charge in addition to your membership fee. For some sessions there are space limitations so an early RSVP is encouraged. For more information, call (970) 491-7753 or (970) 491-5288.

See below for details about each session or view the Fall 2009 Perk Series document.

A hidden benefit with our Osher membership was access to free guided tours – "behind the scenes" at CSU's new arts complex, a state-of-the-art academic village with classrooms, food services and housing, and the cancer center at the vet school – and lectures – financial planning for this recession and the pine beetle forest infestation. They were almost as much fun as the classes! We will be continuing our membership and look forward to more interesting topics!

– Rita Moon Reid and Larry Reid

Beginning in Fall 2009, there will be an Osher book club as an additional benefit of your Osher membership. See below for more information or view the Fall 2009 Book Club document (PDF).

Discovering Healthy Lifestyles: Presentation on Neuromuscular Aging and Tour of Clinical and Research Laboratories
Date: Monday, November 2, 2009 – 2:00 p.m. - 4 p.m.
RSVP: 970-988-5823 or email stacy.grant@colostate.edu
Location: Given upon registration

Hear a presentation on neuromuscular aging and take a tour of CSU's clinical and research labs, guided by.

  • Dr. Brian Tracy, Neuromuscular Function Laboratory
Dr. Tracy's research interests focus on the effects of training interventions on the neuromuscular system of elderly adults, neural mechanisms that underlie changes in the strength and steadiness of muscle contractions with aging, and sarcopenia and frailty in older adults. His work, funded by the National Institute on Aging, is performed on young and elderly humans in both cross-sectional comparisons and longitudinal interventions.
  • Dr. Benjamin Miller, Skeletal Muscular Laboratory
Studies both healthy skeletal muscle and the deterioration of skeletal muscle with age. The primary goal of our research is to determine the causes of age-related decreases in muscle size and strength (sarcopenia), and how to slow that progression or reverse it. We focus on non-pharmaceutical interventions of exercise and nutrition to obtain these goals.
  • Dr. Chris Bell, Integrative Biology Laboratory
Dr. Bell's current research interests include the regulation of energy expenditure by the sympathetic nervous system, and how this is influenced by aging, habitual exercise, molecular and genetic properties of beta-adrenergic receptors, and oxidative stress.
  • Dr. Frank Dinenno, Human Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory (HCPL)
Dr. Dinenno's research interests include: 1) the interactions between the sympathetic neural vasoconstrictor and the local metabolic vasodilator systems in the control of vascular tone in humans; (2) the effects of aging on vascular control during various stressors (e.g., exercise, hypoxia); and (3) the role of lifestyle and/or behavioral factors in attenuating (or possibly reversing) some of the detrimental changes that occur in the cardiovascular system as humans age.
