Degree Overview

The Master of Music in Music Therapy degree from Colorado State University will advance your knowledge of Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) theory and practice and will expand your skills and knowledge to use music within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, psychological, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. You will gain knowledge of neurological sciences, music, research, and evidence-based practice to expand the depth and breadth of your clinical skills in advanced and specialized fields.

You will prepare to be a neurologic music therapist by using a variety of evidence-based techniques to address sensorimotor, speech and language, cognitive, and psychosocial behavior. Learn to work with people who have neurological disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Autism, developmental disorders, and multiple sclerosis. You will also learn how to develop treatment programs for your patients that involve singing, listening, creating, and moving to music.

You will develop skills of therapeutic use of music in the restoration, maintenance, and improvement of mental and physical health to bring about desirable changes in behavior. Such changes enable individuals to understand themselves and the world differently. This degree teaches you a practical application of your music skills that includes helping people to use music to:

  • Rehabilitate individuals with brain and physical injuries.
  • Help improve the quality of life for the elderly and infirm.
  • Improve communication, academic performance, emotional growth, and social skills.
  • Promote wellness, enhance memory, and express feelings.
  • Alleviate chronic pain.
  • Ease childbirth.
  • Manage stress and employ relaxation techniques.
  • Stimulate infant children and assist with motor development.
  • Offer preventative health care.

Colorado State University has a nationally known Master’s of Music Therapy program with skilled, expert faculty. This program involves the same high quality faculty and in-depth courses, but allows for more flexibility and convenience since this degree is available online with only one on-campus session each year.

Online, streaming video, and on-campus. Three extended weekend on-campus visits (Thursday through Sunday), one each year, are required to complete the program.

What You Will Earn

You will earn the same regionally accredited Colorado State University degree that a student on the Fort Collins campus is awarded. Your diploma and transcript are identical to those given to on-campus students.
