Fire and Emergency Services AdministrationBachelor of Science
The Bachelor of Science in Fire and Emergency Services Administration (FESA) at Colorado State University provides students with the skills and knowledge to perform administrative and managerial duties in fire and allied emergency service organizations.
The fire and emergency services have a long and proud history of serving their communities with a wide variety of fire protection, fire prevention, emergency medical, wildland fire suppression, hazardous materials, specialized rescue, and emergency preparedness services. The administrators of the future need advanced administrative, management, and leadership skills to address the evolving requirements of emergency services. This program is targeted at those students who want to increase their administrative and management knowledge and skills.
Program Requirements
The FESA program is a 2+2 degree completion program designed for students who have completed 60 semester hours of transferable college credit with a GPA of 2.0 or better. Although this program works particularly well for students who have completed an associate degree in fire science or a related emergency services field, an associate's degree is not required for admittance to the program. Prior transcripts are evaluated to determine academic status in relation to satisfying degree program requirements, including general education courses equivalent to CSU core curriculum and all prerequisites for junior and senior level work.
Transfer Credits
A total of 120 credits are required for graduation. Of these 120 credits, a total of 42 upper division credits (300 and 400 level) are required, with a minimum of 30 upper division credits earned at Colorado State. The number of courses needed for completion will depend on the number of transfer credits awarded. A maximum of 64 credits can be transferred from accredited junior colleges or similar institutions. Additional upper division credits are also eligible for transfer consideration if they are from accredited four-year institutions. In some cases credit from military, fire, and emergency service training may be transferred if that training carries a credit recommendation from the American Council on Education (ACE).
Students are encouraged to complete general education courses and lower division prerequisites before, or as they pursue formal admittance to the University. Non-admitted students may enroll for courses in the FESA Certificate program prior to formal admittance.
The education and experience I have obtained in the fire service courses at Colorado State University have allowed me to achieve many of my personal and professional goals. CSU's courses and their instructors provided me with the knowledge and experience to help me develop and work as a highly educated and skilled fire service professional and has been very beneficial not only to me and the fire department for whom I serve, but also to the community in which I work and live.

Program Curriculum
All degree seeking students must take the nine (9) core FESA courses for a total of 25 credits. The remainder of the credits needed for graduation can be satisfied with transfer coursework and electives in accordance with the credit totals described in the program requirements and departmental and university policies. Students are encouraged to design a program of study choosing electives that complement their professional interest areas and career status.
The FESA program recognizes the importance of life-long experiential learning. Elective seminar (FESA 492) and independent study (FESA 495) opportunities are provided to allow students to apply professional experience to learning activities. This is not direct credit for experience. The seminars require students to produce academic quality products and engage in discussion with faculty and peers on the impact of professional experience on personal learning related to the FESA core curriculum. The independent study allows a student to study a FESA topic in-depth that may be based on his or her professional experience.
