After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Select an appropriate biopsy procedure for a given patient and lesion.
  • Describe the proper steps to take in preparing and handling a tissue sample.
  • Use data from research on tumor characteristics to interpret biopsy reports.
  • Describe the specific techniques used to conduct bone and nasal biopsies.

During five years in general and small animal practice, Dr. Dernell's interest in oncology grew to the point of seeking specialization. His surgical residency at Washington was followed by surgical and research fellowships, and then a faculty position with the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University. He is currently involved in clinical practice as well as teaching and research in veterinary oncology. He has special interests in drug delivery, treatment of severe infection and soft tissue reconstruction.
