This course was previously numbered PO 361.
Understanding environmental politics and policies in the US requires basic knowledge of the American political system. Thus, this course will first review how the major components of the American political system affect the formulation and the implementation of environmental policy in the US. The first half of the course will include lessons on the roles played by environmental values, public opinion, parties and interest groups, president, congress, bureaucracy, courts, and state and local governments.
The second half of the course will examine the various pollution control and natural resource policies, the agencies which implement them, and the politics surrounding these environmental policy areas. Lessons in this half of the course include discussion of public land management, forests, grazing, wildlife, water, air pollution, mining, energy, transportation, and toxic waste will be discussed.

In addition to teaching CSU on-campus courses, Mr. Corkran has taught POLS 361 (Environmental Politics and Policy) online for several years. His teaching both online and on campus has benefited from the opportunity to compare the utility and possibility of Internet-based tools.
Mr. Corkran began teaching in CSU's political science department in 1996. He is a Ph.D. candidate completing his dissertation on the politics and policy of state hardrock mining. Before beginning his CSU career, Mr. Corkran received a master's degree in environmental policy and management from the University of Denver in 1994. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1984 from Southern Methodist University.
