NR 551 - Cultural Resource Management on Military Lands

Description

This course provides an introduction to cultural resource laws and policies, and the practices commonly employed in the management and preservation of these diverse and non-renewable resources. It covers a broad range of heritage resources, including prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, historic buildings and structures, traditional cultural properties (TCPs), historic landscapes, archaeological artifacts, archival materials, and Native American sacred sites, sacred objects, and human remains.

Various tools and techniques for accomplishing cultural resource management goals and maintaining compliance with Federal and state legislation will be reviewed, along with a basic introduction to the Federal contracting process. Numerous case studies are incorporated to illustrate key issues in historic preservation and cultural resource management, and the wide array of participants and stake holders involved in this process. Special emphasis is placed on the diverse, multidisciplinary nature of heritage resource management, encompassing the fields of archaeology, ethnology, history, conservation architecture, and landscape architecture, among others.
