FW 576 - Wildlife Policy, Administration and Law

Political science, introductory course to natural resources management fields.

Description

This course focuses on wildlife policy. Wildlife occupies a wide range of habitats and is treated in various ways; thus this course relates to diverse issues ranging from wildlife utilization to protection in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Students attend and report on local meetings of wildlife commissions, land use planning committees, city councils, etc. They recommend how to train a new employee about the policy process that is used by the organization. Students evaluate the organizational structure of state fish and wildlife agencies, annotate major functions of each unit, and interview administrators; then write a new policy about wildlife management that is needed in their community.

Course requires completion of assignments and two proctored exams.

Delwin E. Benson, Ph.D., is a professor and extension wildlife specialist in the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. He teaches on campus about public relations in natural resources policy and takes students on field wildlife studies. He also teaches distance learning courses through Continuing Education.
