How do I apply, and what are the required qualifications?
Application for admission to Colorado State University is accepted year-round for most degree programs offered through Continuing Education. Admission requirements and processes are different for our undergraduate degree completion and graduate programs.
The best way to understand the required qualifications for a specific degree program is to review the admission and application requirements on each degree webpage as well as to contact the advisor or program coordinator.

Will Continuing Education credits transfer to other institutions?
Colorado State University credits, including those earned through Continuing Education programs, are transferrable to other colleges and universities. However, the number and type of transfer credits allowed can only be determined by the institution to which you are transferring. It is important to speak with an advisor at the transferring institution before registering for a CSU course to make this determination.
Will my credits from other colleges and universities transfer to CSU?
Many Colorado State University academic programs allow the transfer of credits from other institutions for equivalent course work. However, all transfer credits are evaluated on a department-by-department basis. We recommend that you speak with a CSU department advisor to determine if coursework will transfer.
Do I have to be admitted to take a noncredit course?
No, you do not need to be admitted to take a noncredit course because these courses do not result in college credits or progress towards a degree program.
Do I have to be admitted to take a course through Continuing Education?
No. You can enroll in credit (and noncredit) courses without being admitted to the University.
Most degrees offered through Continuing Education allow you to take a certain amount of credits (usually less than 9 credits) before being admitted. Once you are admitted you can apply (or transfer) those credits toward your degree program. If you intend to take courses and apply them to a degree program in the future, please be aware of the degree and admission requirements of the degree program you are interested in. All degrees offered through Continuing Education (and CSU) require that the majority of courses be taken after you are admitted to the University.
Check the degree webpage you are interested in for more information.
Where can I take prerequisite courses not offered online through DCE?
Colorado Community Colleges Online (CCC Online), a consortium of partner colleges, is a good place to start if you need to fulfill prerequisites for a CSU course offered through Continuing Education. Visit the CCC Online website to find basic courses in areas such as calculus, computer information systems, or psychology. You can also contact your nearest community college and investigate their course offerings.
I’m admitted to a degree program - can I take a semester off?
Admitted undergraduate and graduate students must be registered in both fall and spring semesters, or you will be dropped from your degree program. However, there are options available to take a fall or spring semester off from your degree program. Also, unless required by the degree program, you do not have to take courses in the summer semester.
- Graduate students can take a semester off by registering for Continuous Registration. You may take off semesters but you must register for Continuous Registration for each fall and spring semester. Before registering for Continuous Registration, check with your department advisor to ensure you understand the impacts to your program of study.
- Undergraduate students can take a semester off by notifying the Office of Admissions and filing an Intent to Return form. Taking a semester off as undergraduate student does drop you from your degree program for the semester you take off, but you can return without penalties if you meet the requirements.
